BOOK REVIEW: Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson

First Impressions: RIVETING

I’ve got chills running up and down my arms right now. I don’t know what I can tell you about ULTRAVIOLET without giving away the entire intricate plot. It’s a story that weaves mental illness with science fiction and it does so brilliantly. Alison is a relatable character filled with fears, the absence of confidence, and an inner strength I wish I had. ULTRAVIOLET kept me riveted from the first chapter to the last and everywhere in-between.

Here's the synopsis from Goodreads:

Once upon a time there was a girl who was special.

This is not her story.

Unless you count the part where I killed her.

Sixteen-year-old Alison has been sectioned in a mental institute for teens, having murdered the most perfect and popular girl at school. But the case is a mystery: no body has been found, and Alison's condition is proving difficult to diagnose. Alison herself can't explain what happened: one minute she was fighting with Tori -- the next she disintegrated. Into nothing. But that's impossible. Right?

I wasn’t expecting so much from this book about a girl in a mental institution who is more than she seems. And I definitely wasn’t expecting the twists and turns this story took towards the second half of the book. Alison is different from other people; where there are sounds Alison sees colors and where there are words Alison tastes flavors. She’s sent to a mental institution because they think she’s murdered the most popular girl in her school. And the only one who believes her innocence is not who she thinks they are. So without giving away any spoilers, I need to tell you to get this book when it releases on September 1st (US)! This book definitely caught me by surprise and spun this unbelievable tale of believing in yourself no matter what anybody says.

Cover: I really think a different cover would be more appropriate for the story...

  1. This is one I'm going to have to look for. It sounds REALLY good. I agree about the cover. I know it's YA but an older looking girl would be better.

  2. I dunno. I kinda like the cover.

Great review! It made me want to read this book when I passed it up before...hmmm, your powers of persuasion are growing. LOL

P.S. I went to link you on my blog roll (I'm making it right now) and your button disappeared! Are you making a new one to match the uber cool header?

  3. @Time4Mommy - It is TREMENDOUSLY good! You NEED to check it out ;) And I think an older looking girl and completely different cover would appeal to a larger audience.

@Trish - I liked the cover before I read the book and found out how awesome it was! I guess I'm thinking about major appeal and I don't think it's going to have a ton of people pick it up because they love the cover. (I admit it. I'm a cover buyer!) And yay! I need all the persuasion powers I can get! ;)

I am working on the button! I'm not sure when it will be up though. I might change the header again... I'm so indecisive! Thank you for liking it! I'll work on getting it done soon though!

  6. This book's second half definitely threw me, too! I did not see it coming AT ALL but I really loved the direction R.J Anderson took Alison's story. And I agree with you about the cover, I was thinking the same thing when I read it. I'm just not sure it does the story justice.

  7. @T.B. - Thanks so much T.B.! I really fell in love with this book, and with the surprise ending it really took me by surprise and left me wanting more! You won't regret reading this! ;)

@Semisweet - I didn't see it coming at all either! And I LOVE the direction Anderson took with her story, it really took me by surprise! The cover really doesn't do the story justice, I think they need a new cover that will appeal to more people, the more people it appeals to, the more hands this book will end up in!
