BOOK REVIEW: Spellbound by Cara Lynn Shultz

I can’t help the huge smile that is plastered on my face right now after turning the last page in SPELLBOUND. To say I enjoyed SPELLBOUND would be an understatement. I know I always say this but I didn’t know what to expect with SPELLBOUND. I didn’t expect to find myself grinning from ear to ear after I turned page after page. This book was not only funny, filled with mush, and sarcastic remarks, it was also able to balance the lighthearted with some pretty dark situations. Here’s the synopsis from Goodreads:

What's a girl to do when meeting The One means she's cursed to die a horrible death?

Life hasn't been easy on sixteen-year-old Emma Conner, so a new start in New York may be just the change she needs. But the posh Upper East Side prep school she has to attend? Not so much. Friendly faces are few and far between, except for one that she's irresistibly drawn to—Brendan Salinger, the guy with the rock-star good looks and the richest kid in school, who might just be her very own white knight.

Emma was not only funny; she was strong headed and stood up for herself. She was an easy character to relate to, her sense of humor made her endearing, her need to stand up for the ones she loved made her admirable, and her past made her seem that much stronger as a person. I related to her on all different levels and it was great to see her character change and grow.

Her love interest, Brendan, was a knight in shining armor; he was strong, smart, and would do anything to protect Emma. I fell in love with him just as much as Emma did. The chemistry between Brendan and Emma was perfect.

Once I started, I couldn’t put the book down. SPELLBOUND kept me riveted, even though I wanted more Witch-tastic-ness (because I found that really fascinating and I want more Witch books out there!)  there was just enough to hold my attention and leave me wanting more. This book is a must-read with enough love to keep you satisfied, enough humor to keep you grinning, and enough tension to keep you on the edge of your seat. You should definitely pick it up when it comes out on June 28th!

  2. I thought this was just OK. Well, maybe that's kinda harsh. I enjoyed it, but it just didn't offer me anything new. I feel like I've read a thousand other books just like this one.

  3. @Crystal and Leanna - I think it definitely offers different things for different readers and I fell in love with the story because I wanted to keep reading. That's how I give my seal of approval, as long as I want to know what happens next, it's a done deal. But I completely understand your reasons for not liking this book, it wasn't flawless, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for you honest opinions! ;)

  4. Haven't read this book (because I'm sadly on a book buying ban. IT SUCKS!)

Witchy books? I'd suggest Witch Child by Celia Rees. Girl accused of witch craft in the past. It's told in diary enteries. Has a companion novel that I haven't read yet Sorceress.

and Once a Witch. More modern day witchyness.

    Happy Reading :)

  5. @Loren - I totally get what you mean. If I had read this book a year ago, I think I would have loved it, but since I've started blogging, I've read so many books just like this one. Still, I did kinda fall for Brendan! ;)

  6. It's funny - I loved this book because it wasn't overly witchy! Not that that's all I loved about it, of course. The writing using modern English and everyday slang just worked so well that, like you, I was laughing aloud in different places throughout the book. I pre-ordered it on book depository, too!

  8. @Trish - Thank you for the recommendations! I had been looking at Once A Witch but had read mixed reviews so didn't bother to pick it up but you've renewed my interest in it! I've seen Witch Child, but never read what it was about, it sounds compelling! Definitely going on my tbr list. And thanks for the links!

I've been trying the book buying ban for the past two weeks and so far I've only bought two books... but that's before I get my paycheck... So I'm crossing my fingers I can keep it that way!

@Leanna - You and me both haha! And I completely understand where you're coming from.

@Kaye - I'm definitely going to order myself a copy as well and your completely right, the slang she used, the way they conversed and just the overall atmosphere worked and felt real. I'm definitely saving a spot for this on my shelf!

@Bookish Brunette - Get it when it comes out lol! I really loved it!

@Natalie - Definitely read it for yourself. I totally understand where the negative reviews are coming from, it wasn't a flawless book, but I really enjoyed it from beginning to end so I hope you enjoy it as well! ;)

  12. I'm glad you enjoyed this one! From some reviews I read, they didn't like this one as much, so I was kind of split in my decision to request it on Netgalley or not. Maybe I'll give it a try now! Awesome review!

  13. @Absconditas - Everyone keeps recommending Once A Witch so I'm definitely going to have to get it and read it! I'm sure I'm going to LOVE it! And read this! Like right away! Lol.

    @Aleetha - Make time! It's a really sweet book ;)

@Mary - I'm so glad someone else loved this book! I really fell in love with it. :)

@T.B. - There have been a ton of mixed reviews about this book, I've read many of them, especially before I decided to read the book. But I really fell in love with it. It actually kind of reminded me of Twilight (in a good way) but I know a lot of people had problems with the predictability and the protagonists. I was absorbed by the story and wanted to know what happened next so that's why I gave it such a positive review. You should definitely give it a try! You never know, you may love it! (I hope so lol.) ;)
